The Boulder County Coroner’s Office ruled Monday that the death of a 10-week-old Lafayette infant was a homicide.
The baby boy, Lyon D. Campos, died from multiple blunt force injuries, according to the Coroner’s Office. His 21-year-old father, Joaquin Campos, has been charged with knowing or reckless child abuse resulting in death.
Lafayette police started investigating Campos on Oct. 18 after responding to a 911 call at his 1927 Lydia Drive home about 7:22 a.m. Campos told investigators that he had tripped and fallen down four steps while holding his 10-week-old son.
Lyon was taken to Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, where doctors sent him home, according to the police report.
That evening, Campos told detectives, the infant suddenly got a “help me” look on his face like he couldn’t breathe. Campos and one of his roommates called 911 and attempted CPR.
