The suicidal man shot last night by Fort Collins police has been identified as James Scheu, 49.
He called police about 7:30 last night to say he was planning to shoot himself, adding that he had several weapons inside his Fort Collins home in the 3100 block of Longhorn Court, according to a news release from Fort Collins police.
Scheu, who had been drinking, told dispatchers he “wanted police to clean up the mess before his family came home.”
Officers arriving at his house could hear shots being fired inside. Then Scheu came out the front door and fired two shots from a .45 caliber handgun into the air and down the street.
Scheu went back inside and continued to fire his weapon before coming back outside where he fired more shots, hitting at least one parked car and two neighboring houses. Scheu then fired his weapon in the direction of an officer.
Officer Carrie Wills, a 7-year veteran with of Fort Collins Police, fired her patrol rifle once, hitting Scheu in the buttocks.
Scheu was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies and Wills was placed on administrative leave. Charges are pending investigation.
