An Aurora man who pleaded guilty to sending threatening letters and bags of white powder to politicians including President Barack Obama was sentenced to six years in prison Friday.

Jay DeVaughn, a 42-year-old former Community College of Aurora librarian, mailed the threats to Obama, U.S. senators, members of Congress and the Argentine consulates in Los Angeles and New York. The letter to Obama, mailed in September 2009, stated: “Your so called health care ‘reform’ is a … joke … Have you heard of anthrax??? Get a whiff of this.”

The powder in the letters turned out to be harmless. DeVaughn mailed the letters from post offices in Denver.

DeVaughn was indicted in federal court in March and pleaded guilty in August. In addition to his prison term, he must serve three years of supervised probation after his release.
