About 20 relatives and friends of slain 16-year-old Alicia Martinez filled the benches of a Denver courtroom this morning in bright pink Hello Kitty shirts, waiting for news of the girl’s alleged killer.
The Japanese cartoon character was the high school sophomore’s favorite, said Savannah Olivas, who is dating Martinez’s older brother.
“We just wanted to show how much Alicia is loved,” Olivas said. “She was really outgoing, friendly and always laughing. She liked to dance and liked cheerleading.”
Authorities in late October found Martinez’s mutilated body in the garage of suspect Edward Timothy Romero, who now stands accused of murder.
Romero, who did not appear in the courtroom, was scheduled for a preliminary hearing today.
The hearing was rescheduled for March 15.
