Commuters should expect delays, slush and ice during this afternoon’s commute.

Warmer temperatures and falling snow are turning slick roads into slushy corridors in the Metro area, and as temperatures start to drop this evening drivers should prepare for ice on the roadways, according to Heather Cobler, spokeswoman for the Colorado State Patrol.

Numerous weather-related accidents briefly closed northbound Interstate 25 near Erie at about 4 p.m.. The road reopened within 20 minutes, but CDOT warned traffic was moving very slowly.

Drivers are urged to drive slow and leave extra space between themselves and the cars in front of them, Cobler said.

Eighty-one plows will be out in full force tonight, spreading de-icer and trying to keep roads clear, according to Stacey Stegman, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

“We’re not sure what to expect but we’re going to stay out there until roads are clear,” Stegman said.

Meanwhile, Denver Public Works dispatched 68 plows to help spread de-icer, according to a news release.

As traffic becomes congested, some RTD buses may experience delays, according to RTD spokesman Scott Reed. Riders should allow for extra time and dress warm while waiting for their buses.
