TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico — Mexican authorities say leftist Zapatista sympathizers held 17 tourists for one day after clashing with government- aligned farmers near a frequently visited waterfall area in Chiapas.
Officials say the tourists included Argentine, Canadian, French and Mexican nationals. The abductors freed the tourists Thursday after negotiating with the government.
Authorities say one of the farmers was killed and seven people were missing after a Wednesday confrontation. Prosecutors say local farmers administer the Agua Azul waterfall tourist area, but Zapatista sympathizers have been fighting for control of the area since 2000.
