DENVER—A standoff between Colorado Democrats and Republicans over state spending has ramped up.

The GOP on Thursday called off plans to work for compromise on a spending plan for next year.

The matter in the state Legislature has to do with a nonbinding resolution on spending the Legislature usually adopts without controversy. This year, Republicans newly in charge of the House, changed the resolution to ratchet back what state budget-writers should plan to spend next year.

Democrats in control of the Senate balked, and the two sides were to begin ironing out differences Thursday. But the House changed course and spiked plans to compromise.

Democrats accused the GOP of showboating on spending because the resolution is largely symbolic. A deadline to recommend a spending plan has already passed.
