Here are a few tips for enjoying your day at a Cactus League ballpark.
• Wear sunscreen and a hat. With the temperatures usually in the 70s or 80s, you must be prepared for what the desert sun can dish out.
• Make friends with other Rockies fans in attendance. Look for the purple gear.
• If you want to get up close with the players, get the training schedule (), and attend any of the open practices at the Rockies’ six practice fields at Talking Stick, the new park.
• Car buffs and sports fans alike can have fun walking through the players’ parking lot. These are young millionaires, so sweet rides abound.
• With 15 Cactus League teams located in the Phoenix area, you can watch several teams play in just a few days.
• Take advantage of the mild weather. Add hiking, golfing, tennis and swimming to your schedule.
• Tickets are still available through the Rockies website or secondary markets. is a good site to check.
• Rental cars and airfares can be pricey because it’s “snowbird” time. Tucson is an alternate location to fly into and is about a two-hour drive to the Phoenix area.
• Take in the desert experience. Sunsets are incredible, and there are many places to visit that can fulfill your cravings for great landscapes, beautiful vistas and brilliant spring flowers. For the latter, try Picacho Peak State Park, midway between Phoenix and Tucson off Interstate 10.
