Thursday was an important day in the history of Greeley, but there were no birthday cakes here, no celebrations, no official holiday. The closest commemoration was 1,600 miles away in New York City.

Thursday was the 200th birthday of Horace Greeley, the bewhiskered guy the city was named for when it was founded 141 years ago by Nathan Meeker, who worked for Greeley as a reporter. They first wanted to name the new town “Meeker,” but Nathan said they should name it after Greeley, who was instrumental in getting the news out about the new town in Colorado.

In fact, no one contacted by the Greeley Tribune — except at the Greeley Museum — actually knew what a momentous milestone Thursday was for the community and the city’s namesake.
