NEW YORK — America’s biggest community of Egyptian- Americans staged a demonstration Friday in the heart of New York City to coincide with protests in Cairo to oust Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
About 500 people gathered behind police barricades in Times Square chanting, “Mubarak must go!” One demonstrator, Manhattan businessman and Egypt native Nabil Abuelata, held a sign that read “Long live the Egyptian intifada!”
The U.S. government estimates that 60,000 Egyptian- Americans live in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, with more than 21,000 of them in New York City.
