SUPERIOR — Not even getting stranded until the early hours of Saturday morning in a bus after a Friday night game affected Regis Jesuit.

After handily beating Aspen 6-0 in the mountain town Friday night, Regis had to make the treacherous journey back to Denver. The Raiders’ bus struggled to make it up the pass before Evergreen. After stopping to put chains on and making it up the hill, the bus didn’t start again. The team waited in the bus until 6 a.m. before some Regis Jesuit parents came to the rescue.

Saturday night, the team was at it again, facing off against Monarch. Regis didn’t seem fazed as the Raiders beat the Coyotes 4-1, improving their record to 15-1.

“It was a long and arduous journey,” Regis Jesuit coach Dan Woodley said. “We got to Evergreen and the bus shut down. By then it was about 2:30 in the morning. We were lucky to have the parents come up and pick everybody up.

“I’m pleased with how our guys did the little things right. When you are tired or have some adversity, it’s nice to know we can just go back to basics. We got a couple lucky goals, and we were able to hold on.”

Tanner Ottenbreit took to the net first for Regis with a wraparound drive to the goal just more than six minutes into the game.

“I was so tired,” Ottenbreit said. “I got to sleep at 7 a.m. and had to get back up at noon. But today we got it together.”

Regis pushed the score to 3-0 on goals from Matt Conrad and Max Buretz. Monarch broke the shutout with a goal by Forrest Guthrie, who drove fast toward the net before hitting the brakes on his defender for an open shot at Regis’ Matt Lechner.
