COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT, Colo.—U.S. Sen. Mark Udall will meet with people in western Colorado about possibly designating the Colorado National Monument as a national park.
Udall says the meeting Feb. 23 at Mesa State College in Grand Junction will be a chance for people to voice their thoughts and concerns about whether the change is necessary and how it would affect the community. The Democrat says the change wouldn’t be quick or easy and would require many months of hard work.
Congress would have to approve designating the monument near Grand Junction as a national park. Supporters say reclassifying the 32 square miles of red-rock monoliths and canyons would bring more attention to the site and boost area tourism.
Udall, a Democrat, is chairman of a Senate subcommittee on national parks.
