AURORA, Colo.—Police say a suspected drug dealer may have discovered that he was under surveillance shortly before approaching an unmarked police vehicle with two weapons and an undercover officer killed him.

Police say the officer fired several shots through the windshield of his car at 25-year-year-old Richard Arreola Thursday. Arreola and his phone shop had been under investigation for allegedly selling methamphetamine to middle school students.

Aurora police in a statement say an officer reported on a police radio that his cover was blown and that Arreola had a gun.

Police released photos that showed a rifle and a handgun at the scene. The officer’s name has not been released.

Arreola’s family say police shot him for no reason.
