FORT COLLINS — Regis Jesuit’s Missy Franklin, making a B-line for the Summer Olympics in 2012 in London, made a huge splash at the Class 5A state swimming and diving championships today.

In her second individual event of the day, the 15-year-old Franklin beat Natalie Coughlin’s national 100-yard backstroke record of 52.86 with a mind-boggling time of 52.30 seconds. Couglin’s record had stood since 1998.

Earlier, Franklin won the 50-yard freestyle at EPIC in Fort Collins. Franklin’s state-record time of 22.41 was just .11 seconds off the national record, and it bested her biggest in-state rival, Bonnie Brandon of Cherry Creek.
