DENVER—A Colorado House proposal that aims to reduce the number of homeless youths by expanding services to them is one step closer to going to the Senate.

Lawmakers gave preliminary approval Monday to a bill that would allow runaways or homeless youths to stay at a shelter or child-care facility for 21 days instead of 14. House Bill 1079 would define a “homeless youth” as someone under 21 instead of the current age range of 15 to 18.

The proposal would allow homeless youths to be placed in a host family’s home for up to 21 days.

The bill faces a final vote in the House before it heads to the Senate.
