The stress of having a husband or wife who is unemployed can hurt the job performance of the other spouse, a University of Colorado study has found.
Associate professor Maw-Der Foo of CU’s Leeds School of Business studies employee- workplace issues, including those related to interpersonal relationships.
Foo said the study shows organizations should be more supportive when their employees have family members out of work — particularly a spouse.
“Organizations can implement family-friendly policies to help their employees fulfill their family roles, which, in turn, may increase the employee’s productivity,” he said in a news release.
Foo and the lead author, professor Zhaoli Song of the National University of Singapore, co-authored a paper on the study, which was published the January edition of the Journal of Applied Psychology.
