Three Democrats joined with Republicans on Thursday in passing a bill that reduces the late fee for registering a vehicle from up to $100 to possibly nothing, depending on the county.

House Bill 1084 makes the late fee $10, to be imposed at the discretion of the county clerk, which is the system Colorado had before 2009. That year, Democrats passed the transportation measure FASTER, which in part raised late fees to $25 a month — capped at $100 total — and made them mandatory.

The Democrats who joined with the 33 Republicans in the House to support the measure are Reps. Pete Lee of Colorado Springs, Millie Hamner of Dillon and Max Tyler of Lakewood.

HB 1084, by Rep. Randy Baumgardner, R-Hot Sulphur Springs, now goes to the Democrat-controlled Senate, where it is sponsored by Sen. Kevin Grantham, R-Cañon City.
