DENVER—Workers in Colorado’s solar energy industry are protesting plans by Xcel Energy to cut incentives for solar arrays.
Denver’s KCNC-TV reports that hundreds of workers rallied Friday at the state Capitol. Protesters said slashing the financial incentives will wipe out thousands of jobs.
Xcel Energy plans to cut the subsidy for solar installations by nearly 50 percent. The utility says the cost of installing solar panels is falling and has asked the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to further slash the incentive.
The solar workers say that if the Xcel incentives are slashed further, jobs in the renewable energy sector will be at risk. The industry in Colorado employs about 5,300 people who work for more than 400 companies.
