DIA travelers Tuesday night may have gotten a rude welcome when they landed — potential exposure to the measles virus.
The rare disease is highly contagious, and a passenger with measles arrived at DIA Gate 39 on Concourse C about 9 p.m. Tuesday. The passenger was in the gate area for several hours, and measles can be spread by coughs, sneezes and mouth secretions, according to a release about the case from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
Passengers or DIA workers in that area should be aware of measles symptoms that may appear from March 1 to 12, the department said. Earliest symptoms of the disease include fever, runny nose, cough, and red and watery eyes. One to four days after those symptoms, a red rash often appears on the face and may spread.
The department advises people who were in the area and later develop a fever to contact their doctor or the health department.
