The month of March in Denver features many types of weather, often changing from day to day. One day might be mild and wet, while the next might be cold and dry.
Extreme weather events during March have sometimes occurred on the same day.
On March 8, 1992, the day began sunny and mild across the Denver metro area as temperatures climbed into the 50s. By that afternoon, severe thunderstorms blasted the area with large hail and tornadoes. A powerful cold front moved in after the storms and temperatures plummeted. Rain changed to snow and strong winds developed, resulting in blizzard conditions. A total of 12.4 inches of snow fell at Stapleton International Airport, with even higher amounts across the region.
March is the snowiest month of the year in Denver, but the snow usually doesn’t stay on the ground long because of abundant sunshine and warmer temperatures. On average, 11.7 inches of snow falls during March.
The first day of spring occurs March 20. Also, daylight saving time begins early in the morning of March 13.
