Accupressure treatment may be effective therapy for people with mild traumatic brain injury, according to a study at the University of Colorado.

The treatment, called Jin Shin, involves using fingertip pressure to stimulate points on the body and could be particularly helpful for returning war veterans.

The blind study involved 38 subjects randomly split into two groups — an experimental group and a control group. The results suggested a link between the treatment and greater cognitive function.

The Jin Shin accupressure could be an effective “adjunct therapy” for TBI, said lead study author Theresa Hernandez. It can be taught to family and friends and also used as a self-treatment.

A paper on the study was published in the January issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of Neurotrauma.
