Firefighters responded to a fire in Boulder’s San Lazaro mobile home park at 55th and Valmont roads at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The woman who lived in unit 15 called to report the fire, according to Boulder Rural Fire Battalion Chief Bruce Mygatt. When firefighters first arrived, she told them her “babies” were inside, he said, leading firefighters to initially believe there were four children in the unit.

Firefighters broke a window, determined no children were inside and determined that the babies were actually cats. At least one cat didn’t survive, but no people were injured, Mygatt said.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 10 minutes. The unit was heavily damaged by smoke. The woman living in the unit left the scene shortly after firefighters arrived, Mygatt said.

Boulder Fire, Boulder Rural and Rocky Mountain Fire responded, as did Boulder police and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation.
