ASPEN, Colo.—A taxi driver in Aspen is behind bars after violating a judge’s order not to collect tips from passengers.
Seventy-five-year-old Phil Sullivan has been driving people around the resort town for free and collecting tips after getting in trouble for not having a state license. Judge Gail Nichols ordered him in July to stop collecting tips. On Tuesday she sentenced him to 15 days in jail for continuing to do so.
The Aspen Times reported that Sullivan admitted collecting the tips. He says he’s not running a taxi business and is simply providing a service to the community.
The Public Utilities Commission asked the judge to sentence him to 30 days.
Sullivan says he plans to resume his unofficial taxi service once he’s released.
