MILWAUKEE — Mike McCarthy embraced Green Bay’s culture from the first day he arrived as coach of the Packers. After his first Super Bowl championship, he’ll stay in the NFL’s smallest market for years to come.

McCarthy signed a new multiyear contract Friday, less than a month after the Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 for Green Bay’s 13th NFL championship.

Terms of the deal, which will lock McCarthy in contractually through the 2015 season, were not disclosed.

• Former New York Giants Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress will get out of prison in June after officials shaved about three months off his sentence resulting from a gun case.

• Authorities said former Oakland Raiders defensive end Anthony Wayne Smith, 43, and two others have been charged with murder in the 2008 beating and shooting death of a 31-year-old man in northern Los Angeles County.

Stanley steady at Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Kyle Stanley shot a 4-under-par 66 at a windy Honda Classic to take a one-shot lead over Rory Sabbatini, who tied the tournament record at PGA National with a 64.

Stanley was at 6-under 134 in a bid for his first PGA Tour victory. Charl Schwartzel was at 137 after a 69, and four golfers were tied at 138.

Frank Chirkinian, the longtime golf producer for CBS who helped turn the Masters into one of the most watched events in sports television, died after a long bout with lung cancer in North Palm Beach, Fla. He was 84.

Astros lose catcher Castro

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Houston Astros catcher Jason Castro will be sidelined for most or all of the season after surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

• Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Silva said he accepts the blame for his dugout confrontation with third baseman Aramis Ramirez on Wednesday.

Kenseth earns Las Vegas pole

LAS VEGAS — Matt Kenseth won the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a track-record lap.

Kenseth’s lap at 188.884 mph beat the record of 188.719 set last year by Kurt Busch. Marcos Ambrose qualified second and was followed by Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle as Fords swept the top two rows.
