FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Larimer County coroner says a 17-year-old boy who collapsed during a rugby match died from cardiac arrest caused by a congenital heart defect.
The Fort Collins Coloradoan reports Sunday that deputy coroner Kari Jones says Matthew Hammerdorfer’s had three heart surgeries because of his heart condition. Players say Hammerdorfer collapsed Saturday afternoon during a match in Tiimnath after being hit in the chest but Jones ruled that the contact did not contribute to his death.
Authorities say Hammerdorfer was not breathing when emergency crews arrived. He was pronounced dead at the Medical Center of the Rockies after being flown there.
