Officials at Denver Zoo announced this morning that 2010 was the second-highest attended year in zoo history.

Nearly 2 million people (1,967,839 to be exact) either visited the zoo or participated in outreach programs last year. In 1995, the zoo set its attendance record with 1,984,097 visitors or outreach participants.

“Not only do people enjoy coming to the zoo for a fun, educational family experience, but our guests feel good about the fact that every time they buy a ticket to the zoo they help animals. We are fortunate to be a family favorite that continues to gain popularity,” said Denver Zoo President/CEO Craig Piper in a press release. “This outstanding community support helps us in our mission to secure a better world for animals through human understanding.”

Last June, the zoo set a record for household memberships, with 64,040 households choosing to be members of the zoo.

The zoo also set an attendance record for the Zoo Lights event during the 2010 holidays, with 185,655 visitors.
