A fire at a Denver apartment complex left 29 people homeless early Monday morning.

Investigators say the fire appears to have started in the attic of the complex at 1110 Xanthia St. in Denver.

It took 36 firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the fire, said Lt. Phil Champagne, spokesman for the Denver Fire Department. He said 19 children and 10 adults were evacuated. No one was injured.

The cause of the blaze, which started about 2:30 a.m., is under investigation.

Resident Claudia Torres, 30, said the heat from the blaze woke her. She grabbed her two daughters, ages 5 and 8, and ran outside with her husband.

“I listened to the noise, I smelled the smoke,” Torres said.

The apartment complex was severely damaged by smoke and water, said Christopher Dunn of the Mile High Chapter of the American Red Cross, which arrived on the scene at 4:15 a.m.

Of the eight units in the complex, only one was destroyed.

The complex currently has no gas or water, Dunn said.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter and is working with one of the building’s owners to get residents food and clothing.

“We’re doing all we can do to make sure everyone is safe, sound and warm,” Dunn said.
