GOLDEN, Colo.—Colorado’s largest school district plans to cut nearly $40 million because of the state’s budget crisis.
The options on the table at Jefferson County Public Schools include cutting two days of classes and eliminating 212 positions. All employees would take a 3 percent pay cut.
The district unveiled the proposal Friday. The school board plans to hold public hearings before taking a vote in June on exactly how to cut the budget.
Under the proposal, some of the positions would be eliminated through attrition. But some new teachers, who work under one year-contracts, could also be let go.
Gov. John Hickenlooper has proposed cutting $332 million from schools statewide to balance the state budget in the next school year.
State lawmakers still must come up with a budget proposal of their own.
