WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service and a union have an agreement on a 4 1/2-year contract that gives raises to about 205,000 workers but forces them to pay more for health insurance.

The tentative deal with the American Postal Workers Union would provide workers with a 3.5 percent pay increase over the life of the contract, starting with a 1 percent raise in November 2012, the union said Monday.
