CASTRIES, St. Lucia — The armed robbery of three gay Americans in St. Lucia has officials there scrambling to assure visitors that the Caribbean island is safe.
The men say masked bandits broke into their cottage in Soufriere on March 3, beat them and tied them up. One of the victims said the robbers made slurs against gays, white people and Americans, and threatened to kill them if they didn’t leave the island.
Tourism Minister Allen Chastanet has apologized to the three men from Atlanta. He called the attack “unacceptable.” Police said Monday that two suspects were arrested. Three more are being sought.
