DENVER—Denver mayoral candidate James Mejia (meh-HEE’-uh) has received the endorsement of someone who used to have the job—former Mayor Federico Pena.
Pena announced his support at news conference Wednesday. Pena was mayor Denver from 1983 to1991 and served in the Clinton administration as secretary of energy and transportation. He says Mejia’s experience operating city agencies, helping to create jobs and making tough budget decisions mean he’s ready to lead Denver.
Mejia has been executive director of the Denver Preschool Program, on the Denver school board and manager of the Denver Parks and Recreation Department in the Wellington Webb administration. He is one of 10 candidates on Denver’s May 3 election ballot.
Deputy Mayor Bill Vidal was named acting mayor after John Hickenlooper took office as governor in January.
