A man who told police he suffocated several cats in plastic bags filled with ether will be charged with aggravated animal cruelty, Colorado Springs police said Tuesday.

David Leisge will be served the summons within a week to appear in court on the felony charges, according to Sgt. Steve Noblitt, Colorado Springs police spokesman. If convicted, Leisge could spend 18 months in prison.

The charges come a week after three dead cats were found in a trash can at La Cresta Mobile Estates, near Murray Boulevard and Platte Avenue. Also found were two bottles of ether, which is used in starter fluids.
