DENVER—State Senate Democrats have killed a Republican proposal to waive vehicle emission inspections in Larimer and Weld counties.
Lawmakers on Thursday indefinitely postponed consideration of House Bill 1082 by a 4-to-3 party line vote.
Democrats argued that looming federal clean air standards will make emissions tests mandatory anyway. The bill’s supporters argued that requiring inspections in Larimer and Weld will have a negative economic impact.
Larimer and Weld counties are not required by federal law to inspect vehicle emissions. But state legislators added them to a group of counties around Denver where the tests are mandatory.
