GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Grand Junction is on pace to set a record for turnout for a municipal election, as voters decide whether to ban medical marijuana dispensaries in the city.

Voters also are choosing among five candidates for an at-large City Council seat, deciding on two uncontested Council seats, and casting ballots on whether to enter into franchise agreements with two utility companies.

The election is April 5, but people already have been returning mail ballots.

As of Friday, the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder’s Office had accepted 6,797 mail ballots from the city’s 23,928 active voters. That’s a turnout rate of about 28 percent.

The Daily Sentinel reports that based on the 2009 election, the city is on pace to exceed the 41 percent turnout seen in 2003.
