Boulder County commissioners approve fee breaks for rebuilding homes in Fourmile Canyon burn area

At least some property owners rebuilding homes destroyed in September’s Fourmile Canyon Fire will get a break on Boulder County’s building code fees after County Commissioners Ben Pearlman and Cindy Domenico on Tuesday approved several fee reductions and adjustments for structures being rebuilt in the Fourmile Canyon, Sunshine Canyon and Gold Hill areas.

A property owner could wind up paying nearly $1,700 less in fees and taxes associated with rebuilding a home having 2,500 square feet of floor area, according to Gary Goodell, Boulder County’s chief building official.

Chief among the breaks would be a 25 percent discount on the county’s basic building permit fee for new construction. However, that discount will apply only if the home or other structure being rebuilt is the same size or smaller than what existed on the property before the Fourmile Canyon Fire.

The discount, which must be applied for before Sept. 30, 2012, will apply only to a residential structure that doesn’t exceed 2,500 square feet of floor area, as well as to an accessory structure — such as a detached garage or shop building — of up to 530 square feet of floor area.
