A student from Heritage High School was arrested by Littleton Police today when administrators and a resource officer found a gun in the student’s car trunk.

According to a release from Littleton Police, the gun was unloaded, and it does not appear the student had any intent to use the weapon in a crime.

The student, whose name is not being released because he is a minor, is being charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon on school grounds, a felony, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile, a misdemeanor.

A spokesperson for the school could not be immediately reached.

The incident started early in the day when administrators and were notified that a student had a gun at the school, at 1401 West Geddes Avenue. Officials were able to locate the student who had the gun, and located the gun in his car trunk.

“We don’t believe the gun was ever inside the school,” said Lt. Sean Dugan with Littleton Police.

He said students were never on lockdown, and were not alerted until later in the day. Dugan said he believes the school sent out a phone message in the afternoon to let parents know of the student’s arrest.

The student is being held in custody, but no bond has been set yet. The case is still under investigation.
