Family members, friends and politicians marked the six-month anniversary of David Hartley’s border shooting death with a rally on the state Capitol steps Wednesday.
“Why is David not important enough to bring back home?” asked Tiffany Hartley, David Hartley’s widow. “We should all be important enough, no matter who we are.”
Hartley said she was going to deliver a letter to Gov. John Hickenlooper asking him to intercede and ask President Barack Obama to work harder to “bring David back.”
A crowd of family members and friends bearing signs such as “How Many Must Die?” chanted “Justice for David” during the noon rally.
Authorities say David Hartley, 30, was killed by Mexican pirates Sept. 30 while he and Tiffany were aboard WaveRunners on Falcon Reservoir, which straddles the Texas-Mexico border. His body has not been recovered.
At the rally, she said drug cartels are responsible for raping and killing people every week on the border.
“We’ll continue to hold these rallies until the government wakes up,” she said.
Hartley said she hasn’t heard from U.S. authorities in several months.
Sen. Kevin Lundberg, R-Berthoud, said he attended the rally to support the Hartley family and demand better solutions to the border violence.
“We can’t continue to stand here and say nothing,” Lundberg said.
