Michael West, a professional mountain biker and Boulder resident, was identified Tuesday as the person ticketed for allegedly riding on the north side of Flagstaff Mountain earlier this month — leading to the exposure of a mile-long illegal trail.

City officials refused to release the name of the rider on Monday, but court records obtained Tuesday show that West — a pro rider who is sponsored by Golden-based Yeti Cycles — was ticketed March 19 on suspicion of riding a mountain bike in a prohibited area and trespassing in an area that is closed to protect nesting golden eagles.

According to the municipal ticket, West said he rides on the trail “two or three times a week” because it provides him a “good practice run.”
