The University of Denver gymnastics team was busy at work this week preparing for the NCAA North Central Regional Championship today at Magness Arena. The meet includes the No. 19-ranked Pioneers, No. 1 Florida, No. 12 Arkansas, No. 13 Boise State, No. 20 Arizona and No. 27 Brigham Young.
The top two teams advance to the NCAA championships April 15-17 in Cleveland, as do the top individuals in each of the four events and the all-around who do not compete for the advancing teams. DU’s all-arounders are junior Brianna Springer of Arvada and freshman Melodie Pulgarin Linero of Martorell, Spain.
Springer was 11th in all-around a year ago as a sophomore. DU’s other top competitors are freshman Moriah Martin (vault), junior Louise Mercer (uneven bars) and senior Taylor Sanford (balance beam).
The Pioneers are ranked 13th nationally in vault, 16th in floor exercise, 18th in bars and tied for 29th in beam. They have qualified for regionals 13 consecutive years and are looking to make their fourth trip to the 12-team nationals.
