VERACRUZ, Mexico — An explosion and fire has hit a Mexican factory that distills raw alcohol, killing three people and injuring three others.

The civil defense agency in the gulf coast state of Vera cruz said the dead from Saturday’s blast have not been identified and it was unclear whether they were plant workers or neighbors of the facility near the city of Orizaba.

About 600 people were evacuated from homes in the general vicinity of the plant.

The company’s website says it produces ethanol for medical and other purposes.

It was not clear what triggered the blast.
