SENDAI, Japan — A dog has been rescued from debris floating off the coast of Miyagi prefecture, three weeks after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, according to Japan’s coast guard. The dog appeared to be in good health and had no major injuries.
A helicopter of a coast guard patrol boat, Tsugaru, searching for people missing since last month’s disaster spotted the dog about 4 p.m. Friday about 1 mile off the coast of Kesennuma on the roof of a building that apparently had been swept out to sea by the tsunami.
When the helicopter flew down to save the dog, it leapt onto some nearby debris to escape its would-be rescuers. Three crew members from the Tsugaru then approached the dog on a boat and got it aboard.
