GEORGETOWN, Colo.—The heavy lifting is over—for now.

Colorado highway crews removed dozens of boulders Tuesday that were in danger of toppling down a mountainside onto Interstate 70 west of Denver. Now, crews are cleaning up.

A 25-mile stretch of Colorado’s main east-west highway was closed for hours for the work. A part of the highway about 45 miles west of Denver will be periodically closed Wednesday as crews clean up. Traffic stops of about 20 minutes are expected.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says more work in the area is likely over the next couple weeks so crews can replace a net that catches rocks and anchor boulders that could eventually become unstable.
