Crews in Boulder County are preparing for spring floods today as helicopters begin dropping mulch treatments in the area burned by the Fourmile Canyon Fire last September.
The Boulder County Fire Rehabilitation Implementation Team is planning a series of helicopter mulching treatments to help reduce flood danger in areas most affected by last fall’s Fourmile Canyon Fire, according to a news release from Boulder County.
Two helicopters will drop a straw mulch mixture in the area near Sugarloaf Road and Fourmile Canyon Drive.
Crews will begin mulching the area around Sunshine Canyon on or around April 14.
The straw can act like a “natural sponge” and help reduce flood dangers in areas that are at a higher risk for erosion and floods.
The Fourmile Canyon Fire burned more than 6,000 acres and destroyed 169 homes.
