Crews are trying to beat the wind today as they continue battling a fire burning near Evergreen Parkway and Squaw Road.
The fire prompted the evacuation of 271 homes Friday afternoon as it threatened to move into an Evergreen residential area.
This morning the fire remained at about 40 acres and is 75 percent contained, Mark Techmeyer, spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, said.
Firefighters are working to contain the fire before the winds pick up this afternoon.
All evacuated residents were allowed home Friday night, but were told to remain on standby in case conditions change.
Two smaller fires sparked some concern Friday afternoon including a blaze near North Turkey Creek Road and Danks Drive, between Evergreen and U.S. Highway 285.
“That fire had the potential to really be a problem because of the heavy fuel – a lot of brush and trees – and a lot of residences in that area,” Techmeyer said.
Firefighters responded quickly and were able to get the fire 100 percent contained Friday night. Crews remained on scene throughout the night putting out hot spots.
A downed power line started another small fire near Maxwell Falls on Friday afternoon, but crews were able quickly extinguish the flames.
“That was pretty much over with before it started,” Techmeyer said.
Investigators are working to discover what started the fire near Evergreen Parkway as well as the smaller fire near Turkey Creek Road.
