Getting your player ready...

The Colorado football program acquired some valuable depth over the weekend with the addition of Georgia transfer Logan Gray.

The former Bulldogs player visited Boulder and decided to transfer to CU for his senior season.

He will be eligible to play right away without having to sit out the customary transfer year because he is graduating from Georgia in May and moving to a school that offers a postgraduate degree program not available in Athens, Ga.

Gray went to Georgia as a highly recruited quarterback from Columbia, Mo., four years ago but eventually switched to wide receiver when he was unable to win the starting QB job.

Gray played in 13 games last year as a wide receiver and also returned punts for the Bulldogs.

He said the CU coaching staff envisions him filling the same roles with the Buffaloes.

“They told me that they have a couple pretty strong wide receivers like Paul Richardson and a couple other guys, but they could definitely use some help,” Gray said. “And then obviously returning punts. They’re looking for another guy to help make an impact on offense and special teams.”

Gray’s younger brother, Quinn, is a student at CU and was able to help show Gray around the campus and Boulder during his visit.

Gray said having a family member at CU was a big reason he chose to play for the Buffaloes rather than other options available to him.

DU lacrosse team’s reward is record ranking.

Two days after beating powerhouse Duke 12-9 in Bethpage, N.Y., the University of Denver men’s lacrosse team received the program’s highest rankings in the national polls Monday. The Pioneers, off to an 8-2 start, are No. 7 in the Inside Lacrosse poll and No. 6 in the USILA Coaches poll. DU’s previous high ranking was No. 9, achieved last season.

Syracuse (9-0) is the nation’s consensus No. 1 team, receiving all first-place votes in both polls. Syracuse defeated the Pioneers 13-7 in the teams’ season opener Feb. 20 at the Carrier Dome. DU and Ohio State meet Saturday in the eighth annual Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showdown at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Emporia State hires Vandiver.

The new men’s basketball coach at Division II Emporia (Kan.) State is former Colorado star Shaun Vandiver. Vandiver, 43, replaces David Moe, who resigned last month. Moe is the son of former Nuggets coach Doug Moe.

Vandiver, who ranks fourth in CU career scoring with 1,876 points from 1988-91 and second in career average (20.6 points), has been an assistant coach at Boise State, Wyoming, Bowling Green and Northern Colorado. Vandiver was a first-round pick of the Golden State Warriors in the NBA’s 1991 draft after helping CU finish third in the NIT that year. He was a two-time all-Big Eight selection and played pro- fessionally in Europe for nine seasons.

Before enrolling at CU, he helped lead Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College to a national title in 1988.

“I’m very excited to be coming back to Kansas as the head coach at Emporia State,” Vandiver said. “This is a state with some great memories for me. I met my wife here, our first child was born in Kansas and I was part of a national championship team at Hutch.”
