Getting your player ready...

Carl Lewis is in the blocks and ready for the run of his life.

Lewis, who won nine Olympic gold medals and is considered among the best track and field athletes of all time, announced his bid for the New Jersey Senate on Monday.

“When I run — as you see from my record — I run to win,” the native of Willingboro, N.J., told The Associated Press.

Lewis said he understands he’s entering the rough-and-tumble world of politics, but added, “It’s time to get in the dance.”

He jokingly said he is “slower than I used to be” but was ready to visit all 20 towns in his district.

Lewis will run as a Democrat, according to The Associated Press.

“I’ll be an independent thinker all the way through. I will do what I think is right. I’m going to always look at the issues and vote that way,” Lewis said. “We’ve got Carl guaranteed in our corner is just not going to happen.”

Perhaps Lewis, 49, has the mettle to get this country up and running to glory — again.
