Denver International Airport in February experienced the first dip in passenger traffic since June 2009, the airport reported today.

Passenger traffic in February was 3,648,374, a 1.4 percent decline from the 3,700,975 travelers who used the airport in February 2010.

Aviation manager Kim Day said the months between Christmas and spring break are typically a slower time for travel. As a result, she said the slight decrease in the February figures weren’t completely unexpected.

“Given the record-breaking year we saw in 2010 and the consistent growth we’ve seen over the last two years, we feel encouraged that our airport will continue to see more positive progress as the year goes on,” said Day.

Flight operations at the airport remained “essentially flat” in February with a 0.6 increase, rising from 47,293 in 2010, to 47,600 this year.

However cargo saw a significant increase of 4.7 percent with 42,537,276 pounds of total cargo handled in February, compared to 40,634,853 during the same month last year.
