CANON CITY, Colo.—Fire restrictions have been approved on federal lands in northern and southeastern Colorado and along the east side of the Rockies because of the high fire danger.

The Bureau of Land Management says campfires are allowed in developed campgrounds and picnic areas. But building or maintaining a fire, campfire or any type of open fire in undeveloped areas is prohibited on BLM lands.

Smoking is permitted only in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or an area at least 3 feet in diameter that’s been cleared of all flammable materials.

Wildfires burning in the tinder-dry conditions of eastern Colorado and driven by high winds have burned thousands of acres and destroyed homes and other buildings from the northern part of the state to the southeast part.
