BRIGHTON, Colo.—The former president of a paving company has been ordered to stand trial on charges of participating in a scheme to bilk Adams County taxpayers out of $1.8 million on road projects.
The Denver Post reports Jerry Rhea appeared in court in Brighton on Friday on 23 felony counts.
His attorney says Rhea is innocent.
Rhea and others are accused of falsifying documents and overcharging by about 27 percent on projects between 2004 and 2007.
Rhea was president of Quality Paving at the time.
The company was sold in May 2010. Gary Lozow, a lawyer for the company, says Rhea was let go in September when the scope of the allegations came to light.
Rhea’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 1.
