ENGLEWOOD — All Souls Catholic School will be closed this week because of flooding caused by thieves tearing out copper pipes.
Principal William Moore said the flooding was caused by the theft of exposed copper pipe connected to the sprinkler system. Moore didn’t have a damage estimate Monday but said, “It will be in the thousands and thousands of dollars, I’m sure.”
Copper is so coveted among thieves that the state legislature this month passed a bill designed to make it tougher for thieves to unload loot. The governor signed the law last week. Among other things, it requires metals sellers to show a photo ID and buyers to use the National Scrap Theft Alert System, a clearinghouse of stolen-metals information.
Englewood police are investigating the theft.
